• Shinigami Nobility •
The nobility of Soul Society consist of four great houses who hold the vast majority of land in the Seireitei, and serve as patrons to a vast variety of the Seireitei's families and institutions including the Gotei 13. The noble houses each have multiple clans under their care who serve as their retainers and personal guard and army if need be. Some aristocratic familes own their own land apart from any noble house, and these familes are held in greater esteem than lesser noble families. The internal politics of the Seireitei tend revolve around these houses and their rivalries with one another.
[Beware: This is a long read. It is only necessary if you're considering creating a noble character to find their house and read about it.]

• The Four Great Houses •
Shihoin Clan
The Shihoin clan is an old noble family who came into its own some time in the distant past. Known for its seeming inability to keep the same clan head for very long due to various misfortunes and the nature of their work, they are still a force to be reckoned with. The Shihoin clan is a clandestine clan of talented assassins, and their reputation lingers somewhere between respect and fear because of this.
They are the de facto leaders of the Onmitskidou; should one reach captaincy they are invariably given the title of Commander-in-Chief and made leader of the second division which houses it. They hold the majority of the land in the north quarter of the Seireitei, and their "grounds" are not one large mansion, but a number of homes scattered through their holdings.
Due to their secrecy little is known of their inner workings, nor of their relationships with one another. Many of the clan members are members of the onmitskidou and they teach their most dedicated retainers the art of assassination. They are also called the House of Godly Gears, and under their care are many of the great war tools and relics of the Soul Society.
Family Relics- The Hougu and Bugu, said to have been bestowed upon the family by the gods and whose purpose and location are kept closely guarded.
The Tenshiheisou, a spiritual tool said to have come from the heavens.
The Shihoin shield, a tool meant to destroy the Sokuyoku if (and only if) it falls into the wrong hands. It is kept somewhere in the North Quarter under heavy protection, like the other relics.
Takenaka Clan
The Takenaka clan is a highly prestigious clan, with the second head of the clan (Takenaka Neji) being the same man who founded the Shin'o over 2,000 years ago and served as the Gotei's Captain-Commander until about 650 years ago, when his imminent death from natural causes prompted him to name his son as the new Captain-Commander.
The clan is divided into two houses, each occupying a separate compound on the far east and west of Seireitei (they own most of the eastern quarter and some of the west); the main house is given precedence in matters of inheritance. Known to be incredibly powerful as well as honest to a fault, they have earned great respect among the Gotei and beyond.
The clan, while split geographically, is still strongly united. They are patrons of the Gotei and continue to fund the organization. Their strength lies in well-roundedness, and anyone under the tutelage of their family is sure to acquire a broad range of skills.
Family Relic- The Tei no Tama, a relic hidden in the compound of the Takenaka main house and said to be the lynchpin that supposedly keeps the house and the Gotei 13 safe and united. Legend has it that if it fell out of the clan's hands, disaster would follow.
Kuchiki Clan
The most prolific and arguably most prestigious of the noble houses, the Kuchiki clan is known as both powerful and refined. They are the only noble house whose land holdings are completely contiguous; they control the south quarter and part of the southwest. Their clan members stay in the Kuchiki family manor, a sprawling estate with many amenities.
With a reputation of being intellectuals and overall well-educated, it's no surprise that the Kuchiki clan is tasked with keeping records of the history of Soul Society. By far the largest house in numbers, they are rigidly structured and generally sticklers for order. They have a long-standing rivalry with the Kawajiri house, though by now no one can recall why. They are masters of strategy and the sword, and the families under them are taught as such.
Kawajiri Clan
The Kawajiri clan is famously scattered, but is a great house nonetheless; its clan head is one of the few remaining of the original members of the Gotei. The clan holds land all over Seireitei, and they own multiple homes for the family and its branches. Their associations with one another are not strong, but they are there, though it's not uncommon for branch houses to simply flow along their own path for ages unhindered and still remain successful.
They are pugnacious and skilled in physical combat--their clan head pioneered a mixed form of Hakuda that draws influence from human styles and the standard shinigami discipline which has gained a significant minority foothold, especially in his own division. They're also famous (or infamous) for their hot-bloodedness, a trait that in their case truly seems to run in the blood.

• Aristocrats •
Aristocratic houses are considered nobility in their own right, and enjoy luxury that lower families in the Seireitei do not. These aristocrats own their own land, having purchased it long ago.
Kyouraku Family
Ukitake Family
Kuroda Family
An aristocratic family infamous for the sheer number of internal rivalries and quarrels they undergo. The fighting has died down in the years since Kuroda Hatsumomo took her place as the clan head after her husband, Kuroda Yoshida, died of mysterious causes. They have a reputation for producing very powerful shinigami.
Kujaku Family
A family that serves as retainers to the Wise Men of the Central 46. The current clan head is known to have children by several wives, and most are dedicated completely to their clan and compete fiercely for the favor of the clan head in matters of succession.
